Notes
Death Notes:
We are not sure if Elizabeth Stephens died in Macon or Adair Co., MO. John W. Greathouse Jr. said she died in Adair Co., MO. John Sr. and Elizabeth were living in Adair Co., and then John Sr. bought land in Macon Co., MO in 1857. The birth of the twins (Melissa and Thomas) was registered in Macon Co., and notes that they were born in 1855-56 in Macon Co. They lived in the area that is close to the Macon-Adair County line.It would have been closer to have the twins birth registered in Adair Co., but they were registered in Macon Co. It seems more likely that she died in Macon County.
Burial Notes:
She is probably buried in the Shirley Cemetery in Macon Co. It is the only cemetery near Mercyville in either county. She could also be in the Scofield Cemetery in Adair Co., or in the Billiter family cemetery in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Adair Co. These were family cemeteries for her children's families.
General:
Source: Donna Lester - There is no known tombstone for Elizabeth Stephens Greathouse. She died circa 1857--1858 in Macon or Adair County, MO. We have established this range of years and location because she died after the birth of the twins: Melissa and Thomas. The twins were born about March 1857 (based on the 1900 census for Melissa, wife of David Myers) and we figure she probably died from complications of their birth. John Sr. remarried by July 18, 1858. The first records of John W. Sr. in Macon County are when he purchased land in August of 1857. It appears that his first wife died while living on this property, and if so, then she is probably buried in the Shirley Cemetery in Macon County, MO. John Jr. says that his mother died in Adair County. There are no listings for her in any Adair County, MO cemetery. The twins were born in Macon County, MO.

Elizabeth Stephens may be a daughter of James Stephens/Stevens Sr. and sister to James Stephens/Stevens Jr. James Stephens Jr. married Mary Ann Greathouse, daughter of Harmon Greathouse born about 1787. Harmon bought the family farm from James Stephens Sr. The Stevens and Greathouse children may have grown up together and intermarried. No record has yet been found of James Stephens Sr.'s children.
