Rev. War Pension App. VA S38193, was receiving pension 1819 Mason Co., d. 1833. Pvt 2nd VA Brigade and 8th VA Regiment. Early Settlers of Jackson County by William Hannamon, Benjamin Cox and James McDade reared their cabins with the present limits of Union District, and were thus the first to establish civilized homes in what is now Jackson County. The first two became actual settlers and began to fell the forest and cultivate the soil. McDade who was a soldier in the service of Virginia, selected a site for his future home, but continued to discharge the duties assigned him--that of Indian scout-and many day and nights did he spend in the dreary wilderness between the mouths of the Great and Little Kanawha Rivers.

Last Will and Testament: Will Book #1, pg. 34., , Jackson County, West Virginia. I, James McDade, of the county of Jackson in the state of Virginia, being of sound mind and conscious that it is destined for all men one to dye, have hereby thought proper to make disposition of such property as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this world, in the following manner, to wit: It is my wish and desire and I do hereby devise to my beloved wife Margaret McDade for and during her natural life, all the Estate that I am in possession of, both real and personal, and at her death to be equally divided between my children and my wife Margaret's in equal proportion to each, except to my daughter, Sally Greathouse, she is not have but one dollar to be made out of the property when sold as hereinafter described. I also appoint John Harpold Executor of this my last will and testament, and that he will after the death of my wife, Margaret, sell the property then remaining and make distribution as above mentioned, hereby revoking all other will(s) by me formerly made.
