At the start of the Civil War he witrh his wife's two brothers joined the Southern Army. The war ruined his river business and after the war he moved to Missouri. Charles married Susan Thistle Russell, daughter of Joshua Russell and Evalina Phillips Thistle, on 4 Nov 1851. (Susan Thistle Russell was born in 1829 and died in 1909.)
