bullet  Notes:

Source: We have previously thought that Martha Carson had married first Frederick Wodke and married secondly James Newton Salisbury. Also that she had a child named James Newton Salisbury b. 15 Jan 1865 at Salisbury, OH. at that time Martha would have been only 12 years of age.

Source: Chris Bailey per e-mail 10 Apr 1998. "I do not think this Martha ever married a Wodke and probably not James Newton Salisbury. James Carson's will and probate petition suggests that Martha Carson was unmarried in 1897 and living in Wichita, KS....also it seems unlikely she had a son named "James Newton" Wodke, then later married a man named "James Newton" Salisbury. I also believe Della Eleanor is Martha's illigitimate daughter. I know that she was not the daughter of James and Eleanor (Greathouse) Carson and is probably the granddaughter "Ella" who was living at Wichita, KS in 1897 with Martha Carson".

Source: Marjorie Fletcher as told to her by her grandmother, Della Elnora, a few years before she died at age 92. "Martha Carson, as a young girl, worked as a housekeeper for the family of Dr. James Newton Salisbury at his home in Russelville, OH. She had an illegitimate child by the Dr. in 1870 who was named Nola A. Carson. James Carson, Martha's father, was very unhappy with his daughter. In 1876 she had another child with the Dr. named Charles William Carson. The last illegitimate child Martha Carson had with Dr. Salisbury was my Grandmother, Della Elnora Carson, born in 1882 in Eastwood, OH. James Carson was so unhappy with Martha that he asked her to leave his home. She left the two older children with James and Eleanor Carson to raise and took my grandmother to a Greathouse relation in W.VA staying there only a short time then she traveled to Council Grove, KS and stayed with her Aunt, Mrs. Margaret Pullisam of Council Grove, KS." Margaret was the sister of the father James Carson.
Dr. Salisbury and Martha were never married as he was already married to Lydia Payne Salisbury and had a family. Dr. Salisbury was much older than Martha and about the age of her father, James. There in Council Grove, she met a wiodower by the name of Frederick Wodke. They were married about 1886. Martha raised his 5 children and my grandmother there on a farm in Council Grove. May grandmother said they all had a happy childhood. Martha and Fred Wodke did not have any children together.
