At the start of the Civil War some brigands in Eastern TN went on a rampage and killed and injured several persons. Evidently the injured people were Union sympathizers. Among the people involved was a William Hartsell. From this information Hartsell was not convicted of any crime, while others in the gang were convicted. At this point we are not sure that this is our William Hartsell.
