He farmed the home place all of his life, and has taken unusual interest in keeping the farm home as it was in the days of his parents. (Francis's books and records are in the writing desk where he left them and Jane's dress is still hanging in her closet). His son Gilbert collected the information for this family record The Descendants of Francis Greathouse.

Enoch Greathouse. Cleveland's great grandfather, a native of Germany. came to the United States, settled for a time in Pennsylvania. then moved to Kentucky. In 1804 he came to Illinois and settled on the land which is now Mt Carmel, the first settler in Mt Carmel Precinct and one of the first in that part of Illinois west of the Wabash River. Enoch had four children, Enoch Jr., Rachel, Leah and Isaac.
Isaac. Cleveland's grandfather. was born in Kentucky in 1782 and came to Edwards County in 1815, being one of the first five families to settle in the county. In 1821 he settled on the land lying on the north east corner of what is now the intersection of Illinois Route 130 and the West Salem-Mt. Erie Road. Isaac: had eleven children: David.,Princeton, Enoch, George, Dorothy. Eliza. Julia. Francis, Jane, Ellen. and Nancy. Isaac: died in 1843.
Francis , Cleveland's father. was born in 1831. He inherited and bought much land in Edwards and Wabash counties and built his own home one-fourth mile south of the West Salem- Mt Erie Road and what is now Illinois Route 130. . This home. Built about 1850, shown in the picture (Francis, his wife, June. and little son. Cleveland are standing at the gate) is still standing. though in disrepair (1980). This home was also used as a stage-coach stop in Francis' time on the Hack Line or AC Trail (Albion to Charleston). Francis had nine children: Timothy. Jersey. Charles. Alta. Mary. Walter, Ella., Chester and Cleveland. Francis died in 1917.
Cleveland was born in 1885. .. He married Cleo Phelps and they had four children, Corwin,, Bernadine. Duane, and Gilbert. Cleveland inherited the farm home where he was born, continued to live there, bought more land, and farmed till near the time of his death. He loved the farm and carefully preserved the old home both outside and inside just as it had been in Francis' time. Cleo died in 1965: Cleveland in 1974
