Volunteer fire assistant chief dies in accident
MALINDA RUST

Friends and family are mourning one of Comanche County's volunteer fire assistant chiefs after a multiple-vehicle accident resulted in his death Friday morning.

According to Medicine Park Police Chief Rod McKee, emergency responders were dispatched around 10 a.m. to a stretch of Oklahoma 58 near the Medicine Park Phone Company Inc., 22937 Oklahoma 58, where Radford Hewes' pickup was overturned along the side of the highway.

McKee said dispatchers were first notified about the accident from a third-party caller who was driving eastbound behind a car pulling a trailer. The woman on the phone said the car in front was "driving erratically," McKee said.

As she was still on the phone with dispatchers, McKee said she saw the car, which was being driven by an older man, crash into the back of Hewes' pickup, which was driving eastbound in front of both vehicles.

McKee said the impact caused Hewes' pickup to enter a broad slide, veer off the west side of the road into a culvert and overturn.

Hewes, 53, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected an unknown distance from the truck. He was transported to Reynolds Army Community Health Center, where he died shortly after arriving.

The older man was transported to Comanche County Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries.
