After the death of her mother, Mary Ellen, in 1877, and the Greathouse family's subsequent migration to Kansas, Missouri, and back to Illinois in 1878, Ida is placed with her uncle and aunt, Bingham and Mary Lowe. In October 1884, Ida, age 15, receives $30 from her grandfather and $30 from her uncle Bingham.
