BIOGRAPHY: The source of this information was the book, "City of Des Moines and Polk County," Vol. 2, published 1911, pp. 266-267.
"Hiram was trained as a carpenter, went to Greencastle, Indiana, from Connellsville, Pennsylvania, then moved to Des Moines in 1881 and became a photographer. He built and owned the Conkling Building on Walnut Street in Des Moines, Iowa. His studio on Walnut Street was variously called Northwestern Studio, S. Killing Studio, and Elite Studio. Hiram was a Democrat and a member of the International Order of Odd-Fellows (IOOF)."
