Gave Life for Brother
Marietta, O-Jacob Schlarf, and Soloman Greathouse are dead and George Greathouse is fatally ill from a fire damp. The men were cleaning an old well at Heslop. Schlarf entered first and was overcome by gas. Greathouse attempted to save him with a rope. Greathouse was also overcome and then Soloman Greathouse went down and succeded in tying a rope about his brother's body. George was pulled out alive by neighbors, but his brother perished before help could reach him.

An attempt to clean out a well on the Richard Renard farm near Heslop caused the death of two men Sunday afternoon.
Jacob Schlarb was trying to dig the well, which was down only twenty feet, deeper and Saturday had put in two sticks of dymnamite which did not explode: later he gave it a charge of rock powder which also failed to go off.
Sunday morning he used a charge of rifle powder which exploded. Later in the day he went down in the well to clean it out. He had sent up one bucketful of stone & when (sic) it was discovered that he had been overcome by the foul air. The man helping him gave the alarm which was responded to by the Greathouse brothers.
George Greathouse went into the well and was also overcome. His brother Solomon then went down and succeded in getting a rope around George, who was taken out alive, but Solomon was in turn overcome.
When Schlarb and Solomon Greathouse were taken out, both were dead.
Both were married men and leave families.
They were buried Monday afternoon.
Solomon married Barbara Donaldson, daughter of John Donaldson and Elizabeth Vanwey, on 24 Dec 1886 in Liberty Twp, Washington County, Ohio. (Barbara Donaldson was born on 28 Aug 1866 in , Washington County, Ohio.)
