GREATHOUSE, MERRILL, age 94, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2002. He was born January 2, 1908, in Banks, Pike County, Alabama, the 8th of 9 children of John and Martha Sophronia Sellers Greathouse. A retired State Trooper, he served in Tuskegee, Valley, and Gadsden. He moved to Birmingham in 1966 and worked as an inspector until retirement in 1979, having served more than 35 years in law enforcement with the State of Alabama. He was a member of state and national trooper organizations and in 1999 was recognized as the senior member of The Retired Trooper Association. He was a member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church and the Johnson/Lloyd Sunday School Class.

Mr. Greathouse was married for 65 years to the late Lessie Kindred Greathouse and is survived by two daughters, M. Joyce Greathouse of Birmingham and Patricia G. Holiday (Jerrold) of Marietta, GA, one granddaughter, Lauralee Holliday of Marietta, and many nieces and nephews. Wise, perceptive, charming, and active until his final days, he also leaves a host of friends.

Services will be held at 3 PM at Valley Chapel, Homewood, on Sunday, January 13, preceded by visitation form 1 to 3 PM at the Chapel. The burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Children's Aid Society, 181 West Valley Avenue, Suite, 300, Birmingham, Al 35209, or charity of choice. Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel (879-3401) in Homewood.
