Notes
Burial Notes:
He is buried in Highland Cemetery.General:
Harry Arthur Greathouse was born 9 June 1872 in Bellaire, Ohio, but lived most of his young life across the Ohio around Wheeling, WV.
In 1887, his parents, their three children, family and friends joined a covered wagon train, and moved to West Plains, MO. In the group were two Logsdon boys, who later married Harry's two sisters. The Criswell boys who came along to help with the stock were believed to be young Harry's cousins.
Harry Arthur Greathouse and Emma Florence Clement were married 29 January 1896 in West Plains, MO. Their children were a baby son (died), Tressie Abigale, Isa D., Gladys, Harry Jr. 'Bus', Waco, Wendell 'Wink', and Madeline 'Mickey'.
Harry's father was a farmer and stock dealer. So all of his life, Harry also bought-sold-traded cattle. He was known as a cattle trader. The Greathouse's on the move again. Harry, Emma, their three young daughters, Tressie, Isa, and Gladys moved to Iola, Kansas between 1905 & 1911.
In 1912, sister and family, Clara Bell and Frank Logsdon, their daughter Ruth, along with widowed mother, Sarah Elizabeth Davis Greathouse, also moved to Iola. Their two other daughters were married to two Lamon's brothers (part Indian), and stayed in West Plains. Ruth married and her family became part of the 'Caldwell's of Iola. Their other two daughters eventually moved to Iola. Goldie's children all stayed in West Plains, and the other daughter's (Myrtle) children became 'Lamons & Crawfords' of Iola.
Harry's other sister stayed in West Plains. In Iola, Harry started the Greathouse Slaughter House in early 1920 on the grounds of his home on South Kentucky - later the Lee Ellis Home. This property is close the the Elks Lake. All Greathouse boys, Gail and Derrel Hixon, and Clarence Hixon worked there.
Harry then started Greathouse Market (Meat), 116 East Madison, in what was called the Sifer's Block (the present site of Franklin Savings) which burned 3 April 1933. His sons kept him short of money, he had not insurance. The complete block was destroyed by this fire, and he was unable to rebuild.
Harry started Greathouse Wholesale, with the Greathouse boys driving the truck, the Slaughter house still at their home. Nothing was too good for the Greathouse boys. All four had fast cars - gambled - had fun - more money was being spent than was coming in, so the bank closed Harry, ca 1937.
In the late 1930's, Harry & Emma moved to a farm for the first time. Here, south of Pequa Hill, they finished out their lives.
Emma died 1957, and Harry followed her in 1958.
When your children tease one another, tell jokes, & laugh even before the punch line - that's Grandpa Greathouse coming out in them. Also ambitious & willing to take a chance.
