General:
Jean was hearing impaired, as were her parents. She was 4th in the family of 5 children. She graduated from the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, California with high honors at the young age of 16, and attended Gallaudet University in 1950. Jean graduated in 1955 and married Robert Greathouse that summer. She taught at Ohio School for the Deaf for 3 years (1955-1958). She taught at the California School for the Deaf for 2 1/2 years. On her last year, her diseased kidneys became non functional, and she passed away on December 2, 1963.
Jean's mother was in the State Hospital and her father was an alcoholic, resulting in her being placed in foster homes. She had different foster parents each summer. None of her foster parents knew sign language. She mastered the English language by reading comic books by the hundreds.
