COMMENTS: The following may relate to this Thomas Schoonover: "Thomas Schoonover was one of the taxables in the Minisink, or upper Delaware valley, in Orange Co., NY, as early as 1739." From Hoagland, Edward Coolbaugh. THE SCHOONOVER AND ALLIED FAMILIES. 1954. Wysox, PA: Sacred Art Press, p. 7. DAR Library #53968.
A copy of the tax roll referred to above is found in the folder Minisink Precinct, at the Orange Co. Genealogical Society, Goshen NY. The roll lists all the inhabitants of the territory in 1739, as well as the valuation of property. Thomas Schoonhoven's valuation was 5 shillings, and his assessment was 4 pence. Of the 59 taxpayers listed, only 6 had valuations of 5 shillings, which was the lowest valuation. Other valuations ranged up to 28 pounds, 5 shillings, for Jucobis Swartwout.
William J. Coulter, in his article on the Van Schoonhoven family in the RECORDER, pub. 5 Jun 1936, copy at the Minisink Valley Historical Society, Port Jervis NY, mentions two more children of Thomas and Maria. These need to be verified in the Minisink church records: David, bap. 5 Apr 1752, witnessed by David Cole and Elenora Westfall, his wife, "presumably the maternal aunt and uncle of the child," and Josias, bap. 9 Jun 1762, witnessed by Josias Cool and Margriet Cool.
Tedford E. Schoonover in his book OUR FAMILY HISTORY: SCHOONOVER, KARR, ROBINSON, HAYES (1979, DAR Library), p. 4, said Thomas and his son Willem went to PA around 1775--to Lolbert Farm. [Where or what is Lolbert Farm?] I found no record of a son William of this Thomas. He did have a brother William.
