Notes
General:
CHR-MARRIAGE: William Coulter, MINISINK AND WALLKILL PRECINCT CHRONICLES PART 2; 1956-1958; Goshen NY, self-published; p. 430; Orange Co. Genealogical Society, Goshen NY.
DEATH: William J. Coulter, Van Schoonhoven Family History; RECORDER, 26 June 1936; copy in Minisink Valley Historical Society, Port Jervis, NY.
RESIDENCE: According to "Old Deerpark Days" in CHURCH LIFE July 1894, p. 87 (Minisink Valley Historical Society, Port Jervis NY), Jacob and Margriet were living at Minissing (Machackemech or Deerpark) at the time of their marriage.
CHILDREN: According to Charles E. Stickney, in #27, "The Old Mine Road" in the WANTAGE RECORDER, 14 Jul 1911 through 19 Jan 1912, gathered by Leonard R. Peck of Sparta NJ in the Port Jervis NY Library, R974.73 old, Jacob and Margriet may have had another daughter Allenora or Lenora, the "daughter of Jacob, who lived in Minisink." Allenora married David Cool (Cole), who was chr. 6 Jan 1712. David was the son of William Cool (b. abt 1689) and Catryntje Dubois. William was the son of Leonard Cool (b. 1 Dec 1647) and Maritje Cornelis.
WILL: According to Colter in 26 Jun 1936 article (above), the will of Jacob Westfall is found on page 468-469 of the CALENDAR OF WILLS OF NEW YORK STATE published in 1896. The will was proven on 13 Dec 1784. " Jacob Westfael, of Goshen Prect., Orange Co., yeoman, grandchildren Jacob Cole...." m. Lydia Van Aken; Jacob Schoonhoven m. Appolinia Price; Jacob Westfael Jr.; Margaret Cole, dau of David Cole and Eleonora Westfall, m. Haremanus Vaninwegen; Margaret Westfael, m. Hezekiah Rosekranse; Margaret, dau of George Kimber who m. Sarah Westfall; Margaret and Dievertije, dau's. of son Cornelius Westfall, deceased; heirs of dau's. Marya and Johanna, deceased; dau's. Leonora, Elizabeth and Sarah.
Executors were grandsons Josias Cole, who m. Margriet Mollen or Mullen, of Wantage, Sussex Co. NJ; and Jacob Cole, of Goshen, who m. Lydia Van Aken.
Witnesses were Joseph Drake and Jacob Schoonhoven, farmers, of Goshen, and Thomas Kyte.
RELATIONSHIPS: In the same article, Coulter said that the five daughters mentioned above married as follows: Marya m. Thomas Schoonhoven (our direct ancestors); Johanna m. Benjamin Van Fleet and their son settled near Unionville NY; Leonora m. David Cole; Sarah m. George Kimber, pioneer at Unionville; Elizabeth m. her cousin Cornelius Westfall, son of Abel Westfall and Antjen Bogert.
Also, Jacob and Margriet's son Cornelius Westfall m. Grietje Decker, dau of Andries Decker and Dievertje Maul of Mantague, Sussex Co., NJ.
QUESTION: Coulter also raises the question of whether Johanna Westvael, wife of Benjamin Van Fleet, is the dau of Jacob and Margriet. He said all the church records prove this except her marriage record, where it says she was born at Sindequan (Huguenot). "...however this might be excused by saying that she was born there before the Swartwouts ran the Westfall family off the land...the Westfalls moved down towards Machackemeck...Abel Westfall and Antje Bogert lived...at Sindequan before they started their gradual trek to Virginia. However...no record of Abel and Antje having a daughter Johanna, so it would seem as though our reasoning is correct."
