FIRST MARRIAGE: Marriage intention from G.S. film 113194, Marriage Intentions for all Dutch Reformed Churches in the City of Amsterdam 1630-2; entry made 27 Mar 1632. Additional information from that record: Albert was a 24 year old sailor with no parents living on the Romboutsteegh (street) in Amsterdam, and was assisted by Lourens Pieters, his uncle. (RECORD p. 133)
Actual marriage record from G.S. film 113353, Marriages in the Oudekerk, or Old Church, Dutch Reformed, Amsterdam 1565-1669, entry under 1632. (RECORD p. 133).
MINISTER: (at marriage) Rev. (Dominee) Joannis Silvius.
IMMIGRATION: Also from p. 133 of RECORD: On 26 Aug 1636 at Amsterdam, "Albert Andriessen van Frederickstadt, 29 years of age, tobacco planter," signed a contract with Kiliaen van Renssalaer to emigrate to New Netherland (VAN RENSSELAER BOWIER MANUSCRIPTS, 1908, p. 676-7). The log of the ship "Rensselaerswyck" shows that it sailed from Amsterdam 25 Sep 1636. From VAN RENSSELAER-BOWIER MANUSCRIPTS by A.J.F. Laer, pp. 210 and 211--the "Rensselaerwyck" then sailed from Texel, 2 Oct 1636, and arrived in New Amsterdam 4 Mar, 1637.
NAME: Known as "de Noorman" (the Norwegian), seen frequently in New Netherland records. As per the RECORD: This increases the probability that Albert was from Norway and not Friedrichstadt in Schleswig-Holstein. Also, Bradt was a known surname in Norway.
NOTES: The following is from article NORWEGIAN IMMIGRANTS IN NEW YORK, 1630-1674; "Albert Andriessen", original source unknown, sent to me by Ann Branum, Farr West UT.
Albert may have learned the cultivation of tobacco in Holland, where tobacco was raised as early as 1616. He and his two partners in signing on for the New World were to operate a mill. Not too long after his arrival, Albert dissolved the partnership and established himself as a tobacco planter. Van Rensselaer, the patron said, in a letter to a partner calling Albert "a strange character," nevertheless hoped Albert would succeed and assigned three (inexperienced) men to tobacco planting with Albert. One stayed for at least three years.
In 1638 Van Rensselaer wrote to Albert that he had heard Albert was " 'very unmerciful to his children and very cruel' " to his wife; he was to avoid this 'and in all things have the fear of the Lord.' " He also censured Albert for trading furs, cheating and defrauding a fellow citizen.
Letters sent by Van Rensselaer over the next few years indicated that Albert shipped short weighted and inferior tobacco, and was a poor accountant and manager.
