Their growing family spent eleven years overseas on various tours, including Germany, Bermuda and Tripoli, Libya. In February 1973, Howard retired from the Air Force after 27 years of service, which included many medals and various commendations. The family moved to Round Rock, Texas (Williamson County), in 1974 where Howard began working as an investigative auditor with the Texas Attorney General's Office.

Buddy married Bertie Louise Franklin, daughter of Verda Franklin and Lena Lee Della Bates, on 11 May 1950 in Corpus Christi, Texas.1 (Bertie Louise Franklin was born on 30 Jul 1932 in Gatesville, Coryell, Texas, died on 8 Nov 2012 in Round Rock, Williamson County, Texas 1 and was buried in Gatesville -Restland Cemetery, Coryell County, Texas 1.)
