Arthur Lenox Kirby was born in Marshall County, West Virginia. At the a ge of 19, his family moved to Chautauqua County, Kansas, where they settl ed on a homestead near Sedan. Mr. Kirby married Ida Alice Elliott and t he two lived on a farm near Sedan until 1907, when they bought the Cotta ge grocery and moved to Emporia. Mr. Kirby was a member of the IOOF Lodge of Wauneta and of the Emnor 's Lodge #12, A.F. & A.M . He also was a member of the First Baptist chur ch of Emporia.

A.L. Kirby conducts one of the most completely stocked groceries in th is part of the city. It is located at 1102 Merchant street and has been es tablished three years. Mr. Kirby has had long experience in this line a nd his ability in selecting and grading his stock is of great value to h is customers, as they receive the benefit of his experience and thorough k nowledge of the business in low prices. A general grocery business is cond ucted and the stock is one of the choicest, including staple and fancy gro ceries, teas, coffees, spices, table delicacies, cured meats, etc. Three c ourteous clerks attend promptly to the wants of the patrons and satisfacti on is guaranteed with every purchase. The proprietor of this enterpri se is Mr. A.L . Kirby. Mr. Kirby was born in West Virginia in 1860 and rec eived his education there and in Kansas and Missouri. He was previous ly in business with his brother, conducting a general store. Hew is a memb er of the IOOF and the Masons.
