Jacob Greathouse 1
- Born: , , Maryland 1
- Christened: 15 Sep 1750 1
- Died: Bef Apr 1780 1
Notes:
He probably never married. Quote from an article "Harmon Greathouse Sr. 1720-1795" by Raymond Martin Bell and Louise Franklin Johnson that appeared in Vol XXV No 4, Oct. 1977, Keyhole, The Genealogical Society of Southwestern PA. "Jacob Greathouse was exploring the Ohio in 1773 with Simon Kenton. In 1774 he, with brothers John, Daniel and William, were in the Virginia militia. In 1776 he staked out land on the North Fork of the Elkhorn River in Scott Co.,KY. In Sept 1777 he was under Indian attack near Wheeling. By April 1780 he was dead. Apparently he had planned to marry Mary Hartness...Mary born ca 1759 died single in Ohio County in 1804". Mary was the sister of Lucy who married Joseph Tomlinson, Jr.
Source: Louise Johnson, Jacob had settled near the Tomlinson and Hartness family in now Marshall Co. VA near Grave Creek. He died before land Certificates were issued in 1785. It is thought that his heiress, Mary Hartness was heir to the land he had settlement rights to in that area. (Note: Fdn) I have copy of Mary's will which described this land that she gave to the children of her sisters Lucy Tomlinson and Elizabeth Carpenter.
