In 1770 he moved to Fayette County, PA and during the Revolutionary War rendered military service in several expeditions against the Indians and British. He afterward lived in Shelby County, KY. Will dated 1 Dec 1832 and was probated Sept 1839, Will Book 13:106-9, Shelby Co., KY. Tombstone in the Grove Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville, KY. In his pension application Van stated "I was born in the state (then colony) of Maryland about 10 miles from Hagerstown on the 3rd of November l754. I was removed to the state (then colony) of Pennsylvania about 1770 to the part then known as Monongalea County, now Fayette County, at which place I resided until the hostilities commenced with Great Britain". Was with George Rogers Clark at the surrender of Kaskaskia.
