MRS. ANNA M. WILCOX
WINFIELD - Anna Mae Frances (Greathouse) Odell Wilcox, age 90, of Winfield, Kan., died Tuesday, Jan. 4,2005, at the William Newton Hospital in Winfield, Kan.
She was born May 13, 1914 near Wauneta in Chautauqua County. Her parents were Virgil A. And Lucy (Jones) Greathouse . She had three sisters and a brother, who preceded her in death. Her mother died in 1919 and her sister, Vernie, raised her from 1921, until graduating from high school.
She attended Cedar Vale schools, graduating from high school in 1933. She then attended and graduated from Wm. Newton Hospital School of Nursing in 1936 as a Registered Nurse. She worked as an RN in New York City for one and a half years. She returned to Kansas and worked as a nurse at Boeing in Wichita during the War. She went to work for Wm. Newton Hospital in 1946, serving as OB supervisor and later as Director of Nursing. She worked for 10 years as an office nurse, from 1959-69 for Dr. A. Y. Wells in Winfield and then returned to Wm. Newton Hospital and retired the first time in 1983 and the second time in 1986.
She married Sherman S. Odell Nov. 3, 1940. He died in a car accident in 1949. She married Robert E. Wilcox Dec. 26, 1950 and he preceded her in death March 4, 1998.
After retirement, she served as Director of Volunteer services for Wm. Newton for several years. She was a member of the Kansas Nursing Association, PEO Chapter, American Cancer Society Cowley County Chapter and Reach to Recovery. She was one of the founders of the Cowley County Hospice, started Lamaze birthing classes, started a Cancer Support Group, helping person with cancer and survivors and was a cancer survivor herself.
Anna Mae was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she was very active. She taught Laotian Sunday School classes and served on two mission trips to Haiti in 1970 and 1980, where the group helped build a hospital/clinic. For many years, she collected medical supplies and rewrapped and packaged those and sent to the mission fields.
Her hobbies were sewing, known for making bereavement bears for families that had experienced a death in their family, painting, collecting antiques and helping remodel her home.
She is survived by two sons, Robert "Bob" Odell and wife, Jody, Winfield, Kan. And Robert K. Wilcox and wife, Mary, Ft. Worth, Texas, eight grancichildren, 16 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Services were held on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at the First Baptist Church in Winfield, Kan. Interment was held in the Highland Cemetery in Winfield.
Memorials have been established with the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 206A E. 9th, Winfield, KS 67156, Winfield First Baptist Church and Wm. Newton Hospital Nursing Scholarship.
