Source: By e-mail received 12 Jan 1998 from Chris Bailey, copy to Sherry Scoresby, "information on the correct parents of Mary Ann Greathouse were given as William B. Greathouse, son of Benjamin and Mary Rhine or Ryan, Probably Ryan, of Carroll County, IN. He points out that the error that had led Mary Ann to believe that her father William's parents were William, son of Johann and Amelia Gillispi Groethausen, occured as a result of the early LDS work of Mary Ann Greathouse Downs. Mary did baptisms for the death in or about 1844, but the relationships given were NOT Mary Ann, but to the FAMILY REPRESENTATIVE. Thus the Mary Rhine was not her mother, but her father's mother. (After all her mother was still living so she could not have done baptisms for her living mother.) The Eli Greathouse she did work for was not a young brother, but it was for her father's married brother, Eli Greathouse, who died about 1843. Nellie Knox gave full birthdates for most of Mary Ann's brothers and sisters, presumably from a bible. The reason there was no complete date for a brother Eli in the bible record is that she had no brother Eli. Unfortunately, because of this generational problem, Nellie chose the wrong John Greathouse as the ancestor of this line. The correct John Greathouse had moved from Brooke County, VA (now WV) to Ohio about 1815. I have been there and gone through his probate papers and his son Benjamin was listed. Benjamin went to Carroll County, IN about 1830 and his family was the only Greathouse family to have lived in Carroll County, IN. Once I discovered who was the "family representative," and looked at the relationships to that person instead of Mary Ann, the family fell into place perfectly. I hope this is not confusing. I am absolutely sure I am correct on this matter." Signed Chris Bailey. 1
Benjamin married Mary Rhine, daughter of William Rhine and Mary.
