PORTLAND MAN WHO KNEW ABE LINCOLN DEAD
Francis Marion Greathouse, 86, who as a boy knew Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas, died April 4 at his home in this city, 6114 NortheastThirty-fifth place. Funeral services were held yesterday at the Miller &Tracy parlors. He is survived by six children, Mrs. F.A. Blackmore, Mrs. J.W. Carr, Mrs. L.R. Stiger and E.S. Greathouse, all of Portland; Mrs. T.F. Johnson of Bonneville and Mrs. Severt Tegland of Silverton. Other survivors include seven grandchildren, Mrs. Paul R. Beynon, Mrs. Earle W. Stephens, Miss Janie Stiger, Caroline Stiger, Weldon Blackmore, Norman Stiger and Terence F. Johnson Jr. F.M. Greathouse was born in West Salem, Illinois, and Lincoln and Douglas were visitors at his father's house. The boy went with his parents to reside in Kansas, settling on a farm near Concordia. The young man served in theIndian wars on the frontier, taking part in the campaigs against Comanches, Cheyennes, Arapahoes, and Kiowas. He married Rose Ann Robins in 1872. Mrs. Greathouse died in Portland in 1927. They moved to Oregon in 1874, going to San Francisco by the Union Pacific and coming north by steamer. They resided in Astoria until 1876, when they moved to a farm in Clark County, Washington. The family moved to Portland in 1913.
