224 History of Posey County Indiana (The Goodspeed Publishing Co., Chicago 1886).
David GREATHOUSE was the third of a family of seven children born to the marriage of Lorenzo GREATHOUSE and Parthenia B. Stinson. The father was born September 5, 1818, and was raised in Point Township, Posey Co., Ind., where he afterward farmed. He died February 17, 1883. The mother was born in Kentucky, September 5, 1819, and died January 23, 1884. Our subject was born on the farm of which he is now a resident, January 29, 1849. His services being much required at home, his educational advantages were somewhat limited in his young days. He remained at home with his parents until their death, when he continued cultivating the home farm. He owns eighty acres of good land, and also farms extensively on other land. He and his sister live on the old homestead. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and politically has always been a Democrat. He is quite a prominent man and well respected by all.

This makes him the only viable canidate to have been the single John Grotheiser 21 or over in Berks County, PA in the 1767 tax list. Therefore, he must have been born by 1746.

392 Pennsylvania Marriages Prior to 1810, Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Marriages Prior to 1810, John Artz married Elizabeth Greathouse [daughter of Henry and Ann Greathouse] on 5 Jan 1748 in Christ Church, PA. The Artz family is well documented for several generations by Daniel W. Bly in From the Rhine to the shenandoah, Volume Two (Baltimare, Maryland: Gateway Press, Inc., 1996. The biography of Johannes (John) Artz is given on pages 10 and 11. John and Elizabeth Artz sold their land in Heidelberg Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, on 17 May 1771 [Berks County Deed Book 6, pages 470-471 and 485-486]. "By the early 1770's John Artz and his family had moved to Virginia and were settled near the Shenandoah River east of Woodstock. The first record of John "Ortz" in Shenandoah County is a suit against him to collect a debt owed Jacob Miller in November 1772 (Shenandoah County, Order Book #1, p. 91). Since neighter John Grotheiser/Greathouse nor John and Elizabeth Artz are listed in Berks County after 1771 but all three appear in Shenandoah County records after that, it is reasonable to assume that they migrated to Shenandoah County, Virginia, about 1771.

I don't know why Mary's name appears as Helen on the certificate. Either the recorder did not understand James correctly when he gave the information, or she really did have the nickname of Helen. She also had the nickname Ellen, which is what appears on more than one census record. I chuckle at the name "Salamander" which James gave for his grandmother, Sarah Ann.
