Adam was wounded in the Battle of Winchester during the Civil War. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 and served in Co. B. 13th West Virginia Infantry. After his wond he did not return to service until Mar 6. 1865 and was discharged at Wheeling, WV on June 5, 1865.
Adam married Eleanor J. Smith, daughter of Rev. Isaac Smith and Rachel McGuire, on 30 May 1853 in , Mason, West Virginia. (Eleanor J. Smith was born on 7 Nov 1833 in , Mason, West Virginia.)
