Solomon and first wife, Sarah Starcher had the following children: Mary b. ca 1843; Matilda, b ca 1845, Rebecca, b. ca 1847; Sarah b. ca 1849, m Perry B. Hay, Nov 29, 1867; and Eleanor Jane Greathouse b. ca 1850."
"In 1864, Solomon says he is 44 years old and born in Roane Co., WVA when he volunteers to join Union Army (b. 1820). "Widow's Pension Application #206,193, Margaret, widow of Solomon Greathouse alias Solomon "McDade" , he served in the Civil War, Co. E. 173d, Regt. Ohio Vol., he was married twice, he must have divorced his first wife. See Widow's Pension with Union Civil War record, for he used both names Solomon Greathouse and Solomon McDade. Papers in his record say Solomon was an illegitimate child. (I doubt that he was illegitimate, he was probably using the name McDade to run from his first family)."
