Sarah Jane Greathouse
Notes: John Stull Greathouse, brother of Sarah, after the death of his wife, Lucy Mills (Clark) Greathouse, left his four young children with Sarah. Sarah was teaching at the Science Hill School for young women in Shelbyville. This school had been founded by Samuel Tevis' mother Julia Tevis. John Stull hired a lady by the name of Mrs. Cavender to take care of the children. Mrs. Cavender became very attached to Lucien and plotted to kidnap him. She paid Mrs. Tevis' African-American slave, who was her coachman, five dollars to transport her and the baby, Lucien, away. The coachman told Mrs. Tevis and Mrs. Cavender's plan was foiled. She was immediately dismissed and sent away. Sarah married Samuel Tevis, son of Robert Tevis and Martha Crowe, on 23 Dec 1812 in , Shelby, Kentucky. (Samuel Tevis was born on 28 Mar 1788 in , , Maryland.) |
