"I have an article from the Fredonia, (KS) Daily Herald, dated 11 Oct 1940. The headline reads 'Jerome Greathouse is 83 - Pioneer Coyville Merchant a Resident of County Eighty Years'. It details the Greathouse migration from IL to KS and also makes note of other families traveling with them, as well as some very interesting facts about Coyville, KS, and the area around there. It indicates that in the "Fall of 1859 a little band of pioneers driving mixed ox-team and horse-team caravan migrated from Fayette Co., IL to Wilson County, KS...Polly Ann Greathouse herself drove a horse team and covered wagon the entire distance, holding her two-year old son Jerome, on her lap while her husband assisted the other men in looking after the stock." It is upon this article that the birthplaces of the children are assumed to be Wilson County, KS.

Township Histories
Verdigris Township

The township history material was taken from the Historical Atlas of Wilson County Kansas published in 1881,
... In 1859, John Shaffer, Windsor Craig, Lawrence Clinesmith, Wm. Michaels, Warren Greathouse, Ned Williams, Jacob and Wm. Shoop, Daniel Bean and many others took claims, all settling below Coyville, Doubtless a few came in in 1857-8 who are not mentioned here. In 1859 the influx to this vicinity was so strong that most of the choice land in the bottoms was settled on or claimed.

bullet  Burial Notes:

From town of Coyville, head west to McVey's Bridge. Take first road east of bridge, travel 1 mile down dirt road, and .5 miles on overgrown field road. Cemetery sits in the middle of the field. All roads are currently unmarked, but the town is so small, all one has to do is ask where McVey's Bridge is located.
