NAME: There are various spellings of the last name including Westvaal, Westvael, Westfael, Westphalin, Van Vestvael, etc.
BIOGRAPHY: Lentz (above) states that Jurian was the first Westfall immigrant for a hundred years, and is the progenitor of all the early Westfalls in NY and those who went to VA after 1740.
According to Lentz, Jurian Van Vestvael came to New Netherlands 4 Aug 1642 on the ship "Den Houttuyn;" he was then 13 years old, had been born in Prussia, and was living in Leyderdorp (near Leyden), South Holland. In NY, he first worked on the farm of Michael Jansen in Rensselaerwyck (Albany). Michael had come to NY several years before with his wife. Jacob Jansen came on the same ship Jurian did.
Rev. J.B. Ten Eyck gives much of the same information on p. 47 of OLD DUTCH RECORDS OF THE MACHACKEMECH, AND MENISSINCK CHURCHES, PORT JERVIS NEW YORK AND MONTAGUE NEW JERSEY, and refers the reader to O'Callaghan's NEW NETHERLANDS; and also YEAR BOOK 1896, Holland Society, NY.
Jurian Westfall is listed as "from Westphalia" (now in Germany) by William Coulter in his MINISINK AND WALLKILL PRECINCT HISTORICAL CHRONICLES, PART 3, self-published by author in Goshen NY, 1956-1958, p. 714, Orange Co. Genealogical Society, Goshen NY.
In a description of lands bought from the Indians in 1654 near Esopus (now Kingston NY) and patented in 1657, one of the boundaries was described as "a little kill (creek) which separates it from the land where Jurian Westphalin now lives." Jurian must have been one of the very first white settlers outside of the Kingston-Esopus fort. ("The Old Mine Road," no. 26, WANTAGE RECORDER, 14 Jul 1911-19 Jan 1912, by Charles E. Stickney; material gathered in book form by Leonard R. Peck, Sparta NJ; Port Jervis Library, NY, call no. R974.73 old)
Stickney, cited above, also stated that Jurian Westfall married Maritje Hansen in Westphalia (Germany). However, if he immigrated when he was 13, that is doubtful. Also, the Ohio Gene Quarterly (above) gives the marriage date as about 1655.
