Attended Shadle District School. Enlisted and then mustered in Springfield, Illinois Company I, 32nd Illinois Vol. Infantry and assigned to the western army under General Grant. He participated in the Battle of Shiloh Apr 6 and 7th, 1862. Was afterward taken ill and was discharged for disability on November 22, 1862.
Nelson married Sarah Ann Ulm on 11 Apr 1858. (Sarah Ann Ulm was buried in Lick Prarie Cemetery, Wabash County, Illinois.)
Nelson next married Mary E. Ulm on 1 Dec 1878.
