"John S. Greathouse, who removed to this place from Edwardsville, IL., bought out Jos. Bourrough's interest in said town and continued to live in and near the town of Carlinville until 1846 practicing law. He lived in the house east of the square on lot #71 and #72 which he thinks was about the second house built in the town."

"John S. Greathouse, Macoupin County Bar, came to Carlinville before 1831. Born Shelby County, KY, lived and practiced law a short time in Anderson Co., KY at Lawrenceburg, and then removed to IL. Settled at or near Carlinville, on 60-acre tract. "
When Lucien was 10 months old his mother died at the age of 43. Devastated, John sold everything, resigned, and returned to Shelbyville, KY where he courted and married Catherine Waring. After his marriage to Catherine the couple, with John's four children moved to Uniontown, KY. where they had five sons, from 1846 until 1857.
John Stull Greathouse in later life spent quite a bit of time in Illinois, working and visiting his grown children by Lucy Mills Clark after they left Kentucky and settled in Greenville, IL.
He died in his son's arms at a farm near Uniontown, KY and was buried in Vandalia, IL next to his sons Samuel Tevis, and Lucien Phillip.
