(Enrolled Missouri Militia) That her maiden name was Schoonover, Clarinda and that she married Henry E. Greathouse on or about the 14 day of April 1855 at Clark Co Mo by Charles L Williams, J.P. She also states Henry E. Greathouse died 24th day of December 1884 2 1/2 miles from Brownington in Henry Co., Mo.

Two witnesses are H.A. Durdrear & Bazzel Myers. (witness signature of Clarinda) Dated 13th day of Sept. 1889. Answer from War Department, Record and Pension Division, dated Nov 9 1889, The 50th En. Mo. Mil was a state organization, record of which are not in file in this office.

Clarinda tries again. Hires H. E. Crosby of Washington, Dist of Columbia, her true and lawful attorney (to receive a fee of ten dollars). Clarinda Greathouse aged 58 years a resident of the Township of Osceola county of St Clair State of Missouri duly sworn that she is the widow of Henry E Greathouse who enlisted under the name of Henry E. Greathouse at Kirksville on the (blank) day of June 1862 in Private, Co A 50th Regt EMM and served at least ninety days in the late War of the Rebellion, who was honorably discharged at (blank) and died ...........(same info again) That she was married under the name of Clarinda Schoonover to said Henry E Greathouse on the 14th day of April 1854 by Charles L. Williams JP at home Clark Co. Mo. Children now living under sixteen years of age are, William R. Greathouse born August 26th 1875. That she has heretofore applied for pension and the number of her former application is Rejected on the account of being in EMM. Witnesses (for signature of Clarinda) Bazzel Myers, Lewis Conant. Dated 14th day of July, 1890. Answer from Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pension. There was no answer, what was sent back was another sheet of paper from the first rejection. This was from the Dept. of the Interior. Henry E. Greathouse who, it is claimed, enlisted not stated (she did not give a date or place) and served a Priv in Co A to Reg't E.M. Mil and was discharged at not stated (she did not give a date or place). Comment written on bottom of page. If soldier was a deserter, please state whether the charge of desertion can be removed.

When I first got these papers, I thought that Henry had told Clarinda he had joined the service, left for a few months, came back & said he had been discharged after hurting his back. I could find no records for Co A. 50th Reg't EMM. I think that this is what Clarinda believed. Last straw.

When I told Brenda Schoonover Erickson about this, she sent me what was in Thomas Arnold Schoonover's pension file. He joined the Co A. 50th Reg't EMM at Kirksville in 1863 and didn't serve long enough for his wife to get a pension. Thomas Arnold served under a Capt. Keller.

Thomas Arnold and Henry E. joined together and served together. Records were not found at that time as they were never filed in Washington, DC. Neither Henry's wife nor Thomas A. Schoonover's wife wever able to collect the pension.

Clarinda had wrong year in her pension application - 1862 vs 1863. Also wrong name of Capt. Clarinda had the wrong date for her marriage. I think the dates she gave on her children birth dates were correct. I think Clarinda would not allow his name to be spoken. Son Oscar filled out Clarinda's death cert. Under husband is unknown. Now we know Oscar knew his fathers name. A promise made to mom? 668
