Francis Greathouse lived his entire life in section 13, three miles west of West Salem, IL. He acquaired a considerable amount of land in Edwards and Wabash Counties and built a large farm home one-fourth mile south of the West Salem-Mt Erie Road on what is now Illinois Route 130. At that time this road was called The Hack Line and later the A-C Trail (Albion-Charleston). Francis's home was used not only for his family but also as an inn for travelers to stop at and spend the night. Their horses were stabled and cared for in the barn. Francis is described by the historical record as "a prominent, succesful, influential farmer, and highly respected." He served for some time as County Commissioner of Edwards County. He was drafted for military service in the Civil War but paid the $300 prescribed by the United States Government for exemption. Fifty-three years after his death (1970) Francis had more than two hundred and seventy direct descendants.
