• His obituary was published in 1914. A.J.GREATHOUSE - Friday morning about ten o'clock while Mr. A. J. Greathouse who resided in the southwest part of town, was in the act of putting some coal in the stove at his home dropped to the floor and expired before any assistance could be rendered. Andrew Jackson Greathouse was born in Edwards county, Illinois, April 21, 1939, and died at his late home in West Salem, January 2, 1914. He was therefore 78 years, 8 months, and 11 days old at the time of his death. On January 11, 1865, he was united in marriage to Rebecca E. Quigley, to which union three children were born, as follows: Elijah Greathouse, who resided in West Salem, Marie Alta Greathouse, now Mrs. Geo. Marks, and Lida Jane Greathouse, who preceeded her father to the world beyond on July 15, 1910. In the death of Mr. Greathouse , he leaves a devoted wife, his two oldest children, five brothers and two sisters, five grandchildren, four girls and one boy. Mr. Greathouse never united with any church during his life time, but lived an upright - exemplary life from his youth to his death. In his death his wife loses a devoted and kindhearted husband, his two living children a careful and loving father, the community a fathful and honorable citizen. The funeral services, where were largely attended, were held Sunday afternoon at the English Moravian church, conducted by Rev. G. W. Ford, pastor of the Christian church. Interment: was made in the English Moravian cemetery.
